There was a lovely story this week where a local library in Ghent, Belgium was moving location about 250 metres from its current location. To keep costs down and embrace some community spirit, local school children and volunteers formed a human chain between the two buildings and transferred every book by hand to their new home.

See them in action here.

If only every office relocation could be so simple and generate sufficient interest to get so many willing workers to make light work of what can be a huge undertaking.

Leaving aside the redesigning and refurbishing of a new office (clearly a major project in itself) the sheer organisation required to move a complete company and all its employees from one place to another requires a huge amount of hard work and experience, quite daunting to the project manager who is in control of the move.

It will require liaison with removals contractors, telecoms suppliers, IT network suppliers, the moving and reconfiguring of every computer, fit-out people, utility companies – the list is endless.  Above all, it is vital to schedule things in such a way that there is as little disruption to the day to day working of the business as possible.

However, with professional assistance, it doesn’t have to be such a stressful experience, by planning and putting certain strategies in place an office move can run smoothly.
