Heyhouses CE Primary School
In the lead up to summer 2013, we were contacted by award-winning architects Cassidy & Ashton to design and furnish the interior of the new Heyhouses CE Primary School, Lytham St Annes.
This existing two-form junior school building was being replaced with a brand new 15 classroom school, which included a large flexible area for reception children, a hall, library, kitchen and support offices. After completion of the new building, the old junior school will be demolished to make way for new playing fields.
With a blank canvas and working closely with the architect and the main contractor, Conlon Construction, our brief was to provide an interior design that would accommodate over 500 pupils and supporting activities, yet provide striking, innovative spaces. Creating a happy and secure atmosphere is important in any school, but more so in primary schools, so special care was taken in selecting suitable fixtures and fittings to ensure the comfort of pupils and staff.
Designing each classroom to encourage interaction, flexibility and the ability to accommodate a number of teaching styles was key to this project.
The classrooms were furnished with brightly coloured seating, with under desk storage trays to optimise the space. Soft seating and various floor coverings defined areas within the reception classrooms to highlight the range of activities which can take place, from story time and quiet reading zones to kitchen play and comfortable study areas… Bespoke sink and storage units added the finishing touch to each classroom.
Custom-built figure of eight tables were introduced to the central resource areas to provide additional open teaching spaces for the school outside of the normal classroom environment. Feature flooring, curved screens and customised storage units, ensured best use of the space. Our aim was to create a highly flexible environment; one which could accommodate a variety of group sizes and subjects at any one time.
To house the extensive book collection held by the school, a flexible storage system was introduced to the library, this is fully mobile and can be easily reconfigured to suit individual teaching styles. Soft seating and tables, providing quiet reading areas and/or extra teaching space completed the look of this area of the school. The main hall was furnished with a stage area, dining tables and chairs to provide seating for approx 200.
We supplied and installed furniture to the support offices along with a relaxing seating plan to the staffroom, making it a space where staff can unwind and refresh ready for the next lesson. The reception area was furnished with comfortable seating and a stunning bespoke display cabinet, providing an excellent location to showcase the school’s achievements.
Completed over the summer break of 2014, we are extremely proud to be part of this outstanding school, helping them to provide a happy and secure environment within which the children can grow and develop.
Client comment – “The new building not only looks fantastic but has some wonderful facilities which are definitely going to benefit the children.”
