Hopwood Hall Student Social Space
Since completing the redesign of the Learning Resource Centres at their Rochdale and Middleton campuses in 2010, Hopwood Hall College has continued it’s redevelopment programme at the Rochdale campus with a £2 million investment this summer.
Earlier this year we were invited to design and deliver a new student social space. Our brief was to create a flexible space for the young adults to socialise. A focus group made up of staff and students was formed to establish the aims and objectives of the area.
The challenge for this project was to work with the students and staff to ensure that we incorporated as much of their ‘wish list’ as possible.
The students wanted an attractive space incorporating a variety of zones that would appeal to everyone. The staff were looking for an innovative space that, as well as appealing to current students, would also act as a unique selling point for the college. Above all they wanted a place that, combined with the other facilities they offer, would set them apart from other colleges in the area…
We took on board all their requirements and got to work creating a space that would attract students to really use the facilities and encourage them to engage and interact with each other.
The process began by stripping everything back to basics and over the summer break, a state of the art, modern space emerged…
Once opened up, the size of the space enabled us to create zones for different activities such as table tennis, a pool table, TV & games consoles, IT hub, comfy seating areas and quiet study areas. A detailed lighting scheme was introduced, incorporating LED ribbon lighting and spot lights to enhance the games area.
Styled to reflect the college brand, various multi functional seating areas were formed to provide appealing spaces for students to relax in during breaks. We introduced fixed seating and height adjustable work benching with integrated power & data for on-line access. All furniture supplied was to be easily reconfigured to suit the needs of the college and students, making the space extremely versatile. The contemporary colour tones complimented the modern design and were carefully chosen to promote a stimulating look but at the same time be easily maintained.
Contrasting floor textures and colours, along with the striking ‘cloud’ feature wall, helped to define zones and separate areas without the need for solid walls and it’s impressive floor to ceiling glazed frontage allows natural light to flood the area.
We have been delighted to work with the college again, successfully delivering an exciting hub for students to enjoy…
