Layton Primary School

Layton Primary School, Blackpool

Whitespace were delighted to work with Layton Primary to refresh their Music Room and create a Multi-Functional space. Both spaces were quite dark and uninspiring to begin with and the brief was to create learning areas that were fun and exciting which children would want to use.

Layton is in the top 3% of schools in England in terms of the progress pupils make between Key Stage 1 and the end of Key Stage 2 in English reading, writing and maths.

The aim of the school is to provide a safe, secure yet stimulating learning environment, to provide a wide range of experiences for children through which they will acquire knowledge and develop skills which can be applied both now and in later life; to foster positive attitudes towards work and leisure.

Working closely with the school our brief was to create a Multi-Functional room in the former Music Room and to reconfigure another space in to a new Music Room. They wanted to create modern spaces with the ‘wow’ factor and were keen to make sure that they were both exciting for the pupils, but also functional from a teaching perspective.

The former Music Room was dimly lit and lacking in comfort and visual appeal; the school wanted to revitalize the area into a Multi-Functional space. To achieve this we installed flexible furniture, which included tilt-top tables and stackable chairs along with various shapes and sizes of soft seating for classroom activities, whilst ensuring the space can also be arranged for staff meetings and parent and toddler groups, amongst other activities. LED lighting, feature flooring, sky graphics to a feature wall and a vibrant colour scheme transformed the area into a bright and stimulating space.

In a break from the typical classroom configuration, the new Music Room is now a mix of agile and adaptable furniture solutions that can be easily reconfigured to create a truly flexible learning space. Features include fixed wave desking to the perimeter of the room and feature sky graphics to the windows to detract from the not so attractive view, yet still allowing natural light to flood the area. A whiteboard wall covering, functional teachers’ station with added storage along with funky floor cushions in colours to compliment the Multi-Functional space, complete the look of this exceptional room.

The result is two bright, energetic and visually appealing learning environments, in which pupils can be nurtured to reach their full potential. The staff are thrilled with the results, recently tweeting ‘Love the window vinyl on our new music room by @whitespace001 no more weeds to look at! and ‘Thank you @whitespace001 for our gorgeous multi-functional room! We love it!’

We can’t wait to get started on phase two of the project in just a few weeks time, transforming the staff room and senior leadership team office.
