We are increasingly seeing a rise in the introduction of Learning Resource Centres to our schools and colleges. Students are now finding information in a variety of different ways using a number of different mediums – laptops, smartphones, tablets, as well as the more traditional desktop computers, books and magazines.
These multi-functional spaces are where students can use these traditional and modern means to access information as well as to relax and learn. To create a space where students want to visit (and more importantly use), means understanding the different ways they interact both in study and socially. The design, layout and furniture that are included in Learning Resource Centres are important factors to consider to ensure success.
What needs to be included in Learning Resource Centres?
- Furniture – this needs to be flexible to support different ways of working – standard/bespoke or a combination of the two where needed. Desking, tables and various styles of seating for flexibility in addition to adequate storage to hold a variety of media.
- Zones -The space should be separated into different areas – quiet areas for individual work and group spaces for social interaction and teamwork.
- Connectivity – there should be access to a variety of IT facilities – plug in and WI-FI.
