‘Switch Off’ for a greener workplace

Posted On: 20/04/2011 | In the Category: General

Most of us are already ‘green’ at home, but how many of us actually carry this through to our workplace?  The fact is, the workplace is one place where we can really make an impact on the environment.

Here are some small changes we can all make to ensure our workplaces are ‘greener’:

  • Turn all computer equipment and other electrical appliances off when not in use.
  • When purchasing new equipment research the energy ratings and choose the most energy efficient.  It may cost more at the outset, but will be cheaper to run, therefore saving money on energy bills.
  • Change to energy saving light bulbs and switch off any unnecessary lighting.  Position workstations to make best use of natural light.  Did you know that approximately 80% of the UK’s lighting energy is used in the workplace?
  • Change the thermostat, turning it down slightly in winter will not only help the environment, it will also save money!
  • In summer turn off the air conditioning and open the windows, nothing really beats fresh air.
  • Think before you print!  Use email or notice boards to share information between colleagues instead of printed media.  If you do need to print use both sides of the paper.
  • Recycle where possible;  Paper, cardboard, glass, plastic products and printer cartridges are all easily recycled these days.
  • Where possible use public transport or car share when travelling to and from work.

Small changes in your daily routine really can make a difference, not only do they help in creating a greener workplace they can also save money!
